Hardware in Lift-and-Slide Doors

Lift-and-slide doors (HST) are one of the key elements of modern home joinery systems. They usually represent the largest share of the investment cost, are among the most frequently used elements in the house, open up the largest glazed areas, and are typically installed in the most visually exposed locations. Their sash weight can reach several hundred kilograms, which makes the choice of appropriate hardware particularly important.

The hardware systems used by can be adapted to sash weights of up to 400 kg thanks to the use of robust running carriages. This ensures long-term durability and smooth, comfortable operation.

The hardware is operated using a handle which, unlike standard windows, is positioned vertically upward when closed. Turning the handle downward lifts the sash, allowing it to slide smoothly on the running carriages. The extended handle spindle provides stable support and ensures effortless operation.

Features and Solutions

Enhanced Security with the Hautau ATRIUM HS Safe System

Like windows, HST lift-and-slide doors can also be equipped with RC2 burglar-resistant hardware. However, their construction differs significantly from standard window systems.

The ATRIUM HS Safe system incorporates three security-enhancing elements: locking bolts (Ausschubbolzen) installed in the upper part of the sash, a handle movement locking brake (Getriebedämpfer), an additional locking point (Mittelstoßverriegelung), providing extra protection between the threshold and the door sash.

HST StopUnit Soft-Close System

An interesting solution available for HST lift-and-slide doors is the StopUnit braking system, which slows the sash during the final stage of movement. This solution increases safety by reducing the risk of trapped fingers and also protects the frame against hard impacts from the moving sash, improving both durability and user comfort. It is especially recommended for areas where doors are used very frequently. The system can be applied to doors with sash weights of up to 400 kg.

Magnetic Contact Sensors in HST Doors

Magnetic contact sensors can also be installed in HST doors, similarly to window systems. In HST doors, the sensors are directly integrated with the hardware. A small disc-shaped element is mounted on the frame, while the second component is concealed beneath the lock strip in the sash, making the system practically invisible. Because the sensor is integrated with the hardware, even movement of the handle itself triggers the system response. The magnetic contact sensor can be integrated with virtually any smart home system or alarm system.

HS Comfort Drive Motorized Control System

Many modern architectural designs feature large glazed surfaces incorporating lift-and-slide HST doors. In many cases, the size and weight of the sashes make manual operation difficult or inconvenient. For such applications, developed the HS Comfort Drive — an electrically operated hardware system designed for effortless door operation. Doors equipped with this system move automatically without requiring physical force. After activation via wall switch, remote control, or smartphone, the door sash lifts and slides smoothly. For safety reasons, the system automatically slows the door during both opening and closing phases. It is also equipped with an overload sensor that detects obstacles, stops the door movement, and returns the sash to its starting position. The HS Comfort Drive system can be used in both opening schemes A and C, with sash weights of up to 330 kg. In the event of a power failure, the door can still be operated manually.
